For his final year project in art college, he presented a collection based on Straits Chinese architecture. But it was until he started his shop the love was rekindled for all things Peranakan. One of the many iconic forms is the Kerongsang or brooches worn by the Nyonyas. Jonathan employs the exact construction techniques used in making of these antique brooches but gave it a modern spin so that many of these vintage designs are continually worn with modern day dressing.
Growing up, running around in one of the Straits Chinese house whilst visiting his grandparents is one of the things he fondly remembers from the past. The smells from the kitchen, the quaint interiors and furnitures and the kebayas the nyonya ladies used to wear are memories that inspire this collection.
